This may involve remove some of the lower branches to get sunlight to penetrate further under the tree.

It may be a case of pruning smaller branches within the canopy to allow more filtered light to fall through the tree. Lopping or topping of trees in this situation is not a good option. It may solve the problem at the time but ongoing it will make the situation worse.
