This typically becomes more evident during the winter months when the sun is lower. The tree and the location need to be assessed to determine the best pruning required to improve light. This may involve remove some of the lower branches to get sunlight to penetrate further under the tree.

It may be a case of pruning smaller branches within the canopy to allow more filtered light to fall through the tree. Lopping or topping of trees in this situation is not a good option. It may solve the problem at the time but ongoing it will make the situation worse.
